With thanks to Wendy Perrin.

Typically, to enter travel internationally, and definitely to return to the US from abroad, you need to be able to show negative results from a Covid test taken within a required amount of time. The rules vary by country and change frequently, so always check the latest entry requirements for your destination before you travel.

What Kind of Test Do You Need?

Most countries and airlines accept either a PCR test or a rapid antigen test. PCR tests are considered the gold standard — they are more accurate but take longer to process (typically 24–72 hours). Rapid antigen tests give results in 15–30 minutes and are widely accepted for travel purposes.

Where Can You Get Tested?

Testing options have expanded significantly. You can get tested at:

Your primary care physician's office

Urgent care clinics

Pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid

Airport testing centers

At-home test kits (check whether these are accepted at your destination)

Timing Your Test

Timing is critical. If your destination requires a test taken within 72 hours of arrival, count backwards from your arrival time — not your departure time. For long-haul flights with connections, this can be tricky. Plan ahead and build in buffer time.

Documentation

Keep digital and printed copies of your test results. Many airlines and border agents require a specific format. Make sure your results include your full name (matching your passport), date of birth, date and time of the test, the type of test, and the result.

Returning to the US

As of early 2022, all travelers returning to the United States — including US citizens — must show a negative Covid test result taken no more than 1 day before their flight. This applies regardless of vaccination status. Work with your travel advisor to plan testing logistics at your destination before your return flight.

As always, requirements change. Your Enlightened Journeys Travel advisor will keep you updated on the latest protocols for your specific itinerary.
