The Difference between Information and Knowledge (or, How I Got the Ring of my Dreams)

For my 30th wedding anniversary (and his retirement from the Marine Corps) my husband gifted me with a large plain unadorned band of platinum he purchased while living in the Middle East. It is very high quality. I am sure it cost a fortune. I am VERY appreciative.

It is not my dream ring.

Designing the Ring of My Dreams …

But, it did come with a further gift: I could have it designed any way I wanted!

Piece of cake, right?

Well, fast forward a year and a half, and I was in such a deep state of confusion.

… with Google’s Help 🙂

Rather than go immediately to an expert, I went to Google.

You know you do it: We all feel our plan should be to research the heck out of something, come up with information on the subject, and THEN approach an expert.

Information Overload

The problem is, the ton of info I gathered just led to MORE questions, and left me in a state where I could not make any decisions.

What I had was INFORMATION; what I lacked was KNOWLEDGE.

Endless Information .. But No Knowledge

It’s like having a health symptom and looking it up on the Internet rather than seeking medical advice. There were conflicting sides on whether I could melt the band down to have it woven. There were snippets I didn’t get about filings and what that meant. And there were pictures, so, so many pictures. The project just wasn’t gelling.

Taking Action in the Right Direction

First Step: Mining My Network of Friends and Colleague in the Middle East

One thing I DID know: I wanted the piece created in the Middle East.

It has a history for my husband and I, and if I wanted to add any gemstones, I know where I wanted to source them there.

So, there came a time when I needed to turn to an expert.

Luckily my own expertise could lead me to what I needed!

Second Step: Connecting with the Expert

Because I have lived in the Middle East and now I am working as luxury travel advisor with other experts in travel experiences there, I was able to mine my networks of friends and colleagues to find the perfect jeweler I could trust and who would collaborate with me.

Most importantly, that EXPERT calmed my confusion by discarding the extraneous information I had and boiled the rest down to the essentials of what would make that ring special to me.

Information was what I had in a huge folder; it was the KNOWLEDGE of an expert that got me to the perfect ring for me.

Third and Final Step: Letting the Expert Do What They Do Best – Creating Your Masterpiece

You can see the picture of the ring in its beginning stage above. I can’t wait to see it in its completion and to wear it in the forever that is my love for my husband. I hope to pass it down through generations so my descendants know there were these 2 people who had a history of “always and forever”.
