Online Travel “Deals”: The Old Bait ‘n Switch – Explore The Dark Side of Travel

I wake up every morning, loving what I do.  I really do.  It gives me such joy to give people joy.  Then I open my Facebook to check on friends and what they are doing and excited about…. and occasionally I get ( excuse the coarseness) pissed off. Photo by rawpixel.com on Unsplash

Oh, not at my friends!!!! But at the fact they and we all are preyed upon by “The Deal”. The unbelievable special offering.  I have an expertise in travel, so the travel “deal” is the one that makes me fighting mad- on behalf of my friends.

If you chase PRICE in travel, it may COST you the experience you desire. Share on X

They get so excited: Here’s a great “deal” to share, dream about- hey, kids/friends- let’s make plans!!

Yet a deeper look is like entering a rabbit hole.

The Extra Fees

Oh, here’s all the extra fees (cheap airlines, so add $100-200 in baggage fees.

Want a different seat than the middle one in the middle aisle?

Sorry out of luck.

Want a better room than Worst of House? You’ll pay.)

Talk the Talk But NOT Walking the Walk

They promise what they may not be able to deliver, without sound advice as to what your risk is.

A recent TravelZoo “deal” to Iceland suggested taking a Northern Lights Tour ( extra, of course) but doesn’t tell you it may not be a go because of cloud cover.  Or that you may need to plan to stay longer to give yourself a chance for a “rain check” on that experience ( oh, yes- extra nights cost more).

People React to Timely Offers Because They Don’t Want to Miss Out

And lastly ( here’s the kicker): By the way? This “steal” has now expired, but you can have this trip for +++$ more now.

Blood boiling mad! (Breathe,breathe).

This kind of marketing is so unfair- to the consumer, and to the world as a whole:

  • The consumer feels as if they are missing out on something great, and that the experience isn’t worth more than the “low, low” price.
  • The price is deceiving and draws in AND DOES NOT EDUCATE the consumer with accurate advice and knowledge to make an informed decision. It is literally robbing you blind – of the special travel you can have!
  • This is the kind of travel I call Drop in and Do Harm.  You are encouraged to overrun a destination and leave no positive impact on its economy, environment or culture.  Imagine a large group of strangers showing up at your home, invading your fridge, checking out what’s in your closets and medicine cabinets, demanding to photograph the way you organize your linen closet, sleeping anywhere they fit- and leaving behind their dirty sheets as they pay you their bargain price.  That is pretty much what this kind of “deal travel” inflicts on a destination.

There IS a better travel solution.

  • Value what you can experience more than a rock bottom price that doesn’t deliver on experience ( or the price).
  • Value what you contribute through your travel, for you CAN make the world a better place.
  • Value advice and expertise that will save you money by avoiding costly mistakes, find best pricing on what YOU want, and give you ALL the facts.

JUST SAYIN’.  Morning rant over. Now, in to making people happy!
