What are your reasons to travel in 2018? Do you have new year resolutions? I know I have made some I will break, but figure it is better to set lofty goals than none at all. The way I look at it, if reaching higher raises me above where I am now, the gold is in the journey.

Ten Reasons to Travel that Lead You to a More Meaningful Life in 2018

Reason #1:  The Gold is in the Journey

My journey in 2017 elevated my way of doing things in my personal life AND in my company. I had been on a path to seek out travel that created transformation in my clients’ lives and made the world a better place through their travels. Now in 2018, one of my reasons to travel is living a more meaningful life.

Reason #2:  Travel More

According to studies by The Adventure Travel Trade Association, the very act of visiting somewhere new makes travelers happier, healthier, more creative, more relaxed and more successful at work. But many people leave some of their hard-earned vacation time on the table. THE SOLUTION: To escape the office, pick a slow time of year and book in advance to commit. If time and money are issues, even weekend getaways will scratch the wanderlust itch.

Reason #3:  Volunteer

One of the great reasons to travel in 2018 is being a volunteer for a good cause while developing as a person. Volunteerism is rising in popularity as people welcome the chance to do good, learn and travel at the same time. In a year plagued by natural disasters, opportunities exist to help popular travel destinations. For example, Grace Bay Club in the Turks and Caicos Islands can arrange for guests to help with local recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. There are quite a few ways you or you and your loved ones can incorporate some quality volunteer activities into your leisure vacation that can provide a new perspective and enhance lives in the places you visit.

Reason #4:  Learn a New Skill

Food and wine are top travel trends so why not try mastering Italian cooking in Tuscany, for example? Whether dusting off high school French in Paris or honing photography talents while capturing memories of the trip, travel comes with a built-in education and the ability to learn at every turn. Check out our Peru journey that combines cultural immersion, photography and hiking.

Reason #5:  Be Kind to the Environment

Discover how to make a difference as a sustainable traveler and put your knowledge into practice. El Silencio Lodge & Spa, an eco-luxury hotel in Costa Rica, offers 500 private acres of carbon-offsetting cloud forest, hidden waterfalls and organic cuisine. Each suite sits on above-ground pillars to respect the forest’s natural topography and includes bamboo ceiling tiles, energy-efficient lighting and an energy-saving electric heater. Our curated list of eco lodges lets you get close to nature while protecting the environment and sustaining the community surrounding them.

Reason #6:  Conquer a Fear

Is overcoming your fears one of your reasons to travel in 2018? The beauty of travel is that it can push you as a traveler beyond your  comfort zones. From the more adventurous, such as swimming with sharks in Mexico or skydiving in New Zealand, to something less extreme like traveling solo or voyaging to an off-the-beaten path destination, the options are endless for broadening horizons.

Reason #7:  Deepen a Friendship

Travel brings people together and strengthens relationships through shared experiences. Consider those beyond immediate family — a college roommate or favorite cousin makes the perfect travel companion. For 2018, include spending quality time together deepens existing bonds and creates a lifetime of memories as one of your heart and soul fulfilling reasons to travel.

Reason #8:  Get in Travel Shape

Combine travel with the ever-popular improved fitness resolution. If your style is yoga, meditation and massages in a Zen-like setting, visit a wellness resort for relaxation and rejuvenation. If you prefer a high level of activity, plan an adventure to help you shape up or burn calories. That could be anything from skiing in Switzerland to kayaking in Canada.

Reason #9:  Become a Global Citizen

Reason #10:  Ambassador of Change

I spent 2017 as an Ambassador of Change in a program that was inspired by the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. More than one billion tourists cross international borders each year. Travel fosters greater appreciation of other countries and cultures, and makes one realize they are part of a larger global community. Imagine the lifelong learning you can have, and can instill in the lives of others you love.
